Amateur Career

My Dad and his 2 brothers inspired my early love of golf. When I was a small child my Mother would take Edward and I to watch my father play in the Irish Amateur events. We then both graduated to being his caddy and later to playing in the boys, youths and finally open events.

My earliest heroes were Greg Norman and Nick Faldo. I used to spend hours during the summer trying to recreate their shots at Castlerock Golf Club. I started playing golf at Castlerock Golf Club at about 5 years old. I was more interested in computer games than golf until I turned 15. With practice I managed to bring my handicap down to scratch before I was 17. The year after I managed to win my first Amateur title - the Connacht Boys event. This was the first of many amateur titles, culminating in the British Amateur Championship at Prestwick in June 2001. That was definitely a highlight for me and secured me a spot on the Walker Cup Team. A truly amazing experience and one I was lucky to share with Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald.
